Training & Assessment - New GAS Engineers

To qualify as a gas engineer, you will need to undertake the CCN-1 Domestic Core Gas Safety training and assessement. On successfully passing the assessment you will be a Category 1 engineer and you will be able to register with GAS SAFE and undertake further, appliance specific, training and assessments.

Your route to CCN 1 assessment depends on your existing relevant qualifications and your marketplace experience.

Category 2 experience.
You will be classified as a Category 2 trainee if you have already attained the NVQ Plumbing (6089 or 6012) qualification and can show documented evidence of practical experience of working in the marketplace.
If you meet the Category 2 trainee requirements you are required to undertake the 5 day training course and the 3 day assessment. On successful completion you will be a Category 1 engineer.

Category 3 experience.
You will be classified as a category 3 trainee if you have not passed a relevant allied industry qualification, or possess documented evidence of practical experience working in the marketplace.
If you meet the Category 3 trainee profile you may be eligible to undertake the 20 day Gas Utilisation training course. This is operated as a 'day release' system, 1 day per week for 20 weeks. During this time TGT will also supervise your on-the-job experience training.

It must be emphasised that the student is responsible for finding a work placement with a suitable plumbing and gas registered company. TGT cannot assist with work placements.

On completion of the 20 day Gas Utilisation course, and a minimum of 6 months workplace experience, you will take the 3 day CCN 1 assessment. On successful completion you will be a Category 1 engineer.

This is a 20 day induction course designed for mature operatives wishing to make a career move into the gas industry. The course provides the operative with basic gas knowledge and understanding prior to them going out working on site with a CORGI-registered gas engineer.

The training is aimed at mature candidates who are able to demonstrate that they have a reasonable level of practical skill and understanding, for example someone changing career or someone who, although currently unqualified, is working with a suitably-qualified engineer within the gas/plumbing-related industries.

The course consists of 20 days training at our centre followed by the candidate working under the supervision of an existing CORGI-registered engineer/company to create a portfolio of evidence covering various areas of gas-related work. The candidate is given support and guidance during the process of collecting and collating information to ensure that the evidence is both sufficient in quantity and varied in content.

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of the induction training, the operative is required to spend a sufficient amount of time working under the supervision of a GAS SAFE registered installer. The duration of the on-the-job training and the compilation of the portfolio will be determined by the type and frequency of gas work undertaken. The portfolio of evidence must demonstrate that the operative has undertaken work over the range of domestic appliance types

We will require evidence of the GAS SAFE registration of the supervising engineer.

Upon the successful completion of the portfolio and its subsequent approval by NICEIC /Training, the operatives will be issued with a certificate of achievement by NICEIC Certification which will allow the operative entry into the Accredited Certification Scheme (ACS).

In August 2003, the Health & Safety Executive made changes to the category of entrants that are acceptable for GAS SAFE registration. In brief, the changes made it a requirement that to access the ACS competency route, a candidate had to have previous gas experience.

However, the changes did introduce an alternative method for entry into the gas industry via a recognised training course.

Until this time, the NVQ was the only way for a new entrant to work in the gas industry. NICEIC Certification has developed a training package as an alternative route that takes considerably less time than an NVQ.   The training package has been accepted by GAS SAFE as a route to ACS, and once successfully completed, can lead to becoming a GAS SAFE-registered engineer.
